above the 8th floor

"Above the 8th Floor" is a project that explores the possibility of expanding the public spaces in the modern city beyond the ground floor. In theory, the city can grow endlessly given the fact that the space above the ground is nearly unlimited. However, growth cannot exceed the capabilities of the existing infrastructure.
Upward expansion requires that the streets, functions, and public spaces rise as well. In this new urban reality the streets and functions do not only wrap around the buildings, they cut through them and run between them as well.
chosen site- park tzameret complex

I chose Park Tzameret because I believe it can be transformed to accommodate more residents, include more facilities and services and be more environment-friendly. As shown above, the complex is comprised of two very different and seemingly incompatible urban constructs - a complex of buildings 40 stories high alongside 8 story high housing units.

The current roads are built primarily for movement oriented to the north or south. In this new grid, east and west access has been added as well.

The new buildings maintain the same rhythm as the existing structures 8-story buildings spreading from the west to the east and the high rise buildings spreading from north to south. However, a new type of urbanity is formed since the high-rise buildings meet the 8-story buildings .

stage 2 - creating a second configuration of streets on the forth floor

stage 3 - creating vertical public spaces
The high-rise buildings are divided into 8 story segments, each containing a public area attached to the core. The goal is to create a continuous vertical public space.
